OES extends Flood Warning until 11:00pm

As of: 8 Feb 98 @ 7:00pm

The Office of Emergency Services (OES) has extended the Flood Warning until 11:00pm this evening. Anderson Reservoir spill-over rate is currently at 4,800 cu. ft/sec. Flooding is expected to occur when the rate increases to 5,000 cu. ft/sec. Some homes along the creek are already experiencing flooding; however, residents have observed that the water is rising slower than it did during last year's flood. Officials are expecting the water level to crest at 8:00pm this evening at William Street Park.

Creek expected to reach flood stage!

8 Feb 98 @ 5:00pm

The City of San Jose, Office of Emergency Services has notified Brookwood Terrace community leaders to prepare for possible flooding. The city advises residents along the creek to move their cars and other personal property to higher ground. For more information, residents can call the CITY FLOOD HOTLINE at 277-HELP or 277-4357.

Background:
Anderson Dam began spilling over at 5:00 pm today. The surge of water has made its way into the downtown area and will likely flood lower elevations prior to reaching Brookwood Terrace. The likelihood of flooding is largely affected by the continuous rainfall and other factors (i.e. debris build-up, etc.) Last year's flood was estimated to be caused by up to 6,000 cubic feet per second of water spilling over from Anderson Reservoir. This year, up to 7,000 cu. ft/sec may be anticipated. Residents in the new Brookwood development should find comfort in knowing that the South 21st Street extension was design to channel excess flood waters out of the neighborhood. Homes along the creek are the most likely to be affected.

Need SAND BAGS?

Additional sand bags have been delivered to the intersection of E. William and So. 16th Streets. For more information on availability of sand bags call 1-888-HEY-NOAH.

Please keep Storm Drains Clear

Most flooding in our neighborhood occurs due to clogged storm drains - not the Coyote Creek. Residents should routinely check and clear debris away from all street-side storm drains. If you are unable to clear the drain, contact your neighbors or call the City of San Jose at 277-4373.

BTNA Website in the Mercury News

25 Jan 97

BTNA is making media waves once again! The Saturday edition of the San Jose Mercury News (January 25, 1997) featured an article about neighborhood home pages on the worldwide web. As you know, BTNA was the first to go online in San Jose. Today, we are but a handful in Silicon Valley, but the number is soon to rise. None of this would be possible without the generous gift of this website by our sponsor, NETView Communications, Inc.

Also recognized in the article was the Rose Garden Neighborhood Preservation Association, a fellow San Jose neighborhood.

Disappearance of Real Estate Signs

22 Jan 97

One of the greatest improvements to our Brookwood Terrace neighborhood has been the construction of 84 single family homes along William Street. Unfortunately, efforts to sell these homes are being hampered by the theft of weekend marketing signs that are used to direct potential home buyers to our area. Whether this is a juvenille prank or a result of unfair competition remains to be seen. What is known, however, is that it's a violation of San Jose law and it indirectly hurts our neighborhood.

"What can I do?" Please report any unusual activity surrounding these marketing signs to New Directions (the marketing company) at 778-3916, or the San Jose Police at 277-4222. To learn more, please read the letter to BNTA from Donni Grotte, Marketing Director for DKB Homes.

William Street Bridge Painted in 3 Colors!

5 Oct 96

Whew! Without question this activity was the largest community project ever sponsored by BTNA. 43 volunteers came out on this sunny Saturday morning to paint our historic bridge. Don Koloze, of Orion Painting, had power washed and primed the bridge only a few days prior. Now, it was up to neighbors to paint the bridge with the 30 gallons of plymouth grey, sierra white and equinox (a dark cyan). Somehow we managed to finish just in time for the noon barbecue sponsored by Beautification and Barbecue Corp. Many thanks to Mary Hart and the folks of the Campus Community Association for co-sponsoring this project.

So what's next? We need one more Saturday to finish painting details. Then we proceed to the next phase of the project.... LANDSCAPING.

Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy (NRS)

11 Jul 96

The City of San Jose's Planning Department recently hosted leaders from neighborhoods throughout San Jose to unveil their plans for a Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy (NRS). Upon approval from the City Council, this plan could go into effect as early as next fiscal year. Details include a process whereby each neighborhood will be classified on the basis of condition (good to poor). This classification scheme will then be used by the City Council to determine localities which require a concentrated influx of resources, services and programs to make a positive impact on the community. BTNA and other neighborhood associations in the downtown area provided positive feedback to the planning staff, led by Mike Flores, and urged the City to work with the neighborhoods to ensure success. For more information, contact the City of San Jose Planning Department at 277-4576.

Bridge Painting Day Scheduled - October 5th!

26 Jun 96

The Beautification & Barbecue Corps will co-sponsor a weekend painting project on October 5th as part of the William Street Bridge Restoration Project. The event will occur on the first Saturday of October, from 9 am to 12 noon. A barbecue will immediately follow in the William Street Park. If you would like to participate as a volunteer or coordinator, please call Steve Butow at 293-2522. Stay tuned for more information about prizes and surprises for our community volunteers!

"Lights! Lights!... the Bridge has LIGHTS!"

30 May 96

Thanks to Bill Gundred and the folks at the City of San Jose electrical maintenance for installing our four antique light fixtures on the William Street Bridge. With Phase 1 of the project behind us, its time to plan Phase 2 - stucco repair and painting. Be on the lookout for future dates to be announced.

Community Foundation Grant Awarded

15 Jun 96

The Community Foundation of Santa Clara County has awarded BTNA with a $1,500 "follow-on" grant for 1996. More than $1,000 of these proceeds are specifically earmarked for neighborhood projects. The Community Foundation first provided funding to BTNA in 1991 in order to start our neighborhood association. Today's funding comes with a strong recommendation that we now take steps to secure a regular source of income. The Community Foundation will assist us with resources and expertise to organize future fund raising events.

The Mayor Chips In

13 Jun 95

Upon learning of a potential funding shortfall in our William Street Bridge Restoration project, Councilman David Pandori prepared a special budget revision and presented it to the mayor's office. Mayor Susan Hammer has since approved and included this revision in the upcoming city budget. Specifically, it will provide up to $10,000 for the restoration and repair of the four lamp posts on the historic bridge structure. This work will be performed by city maintenance staff. Special thanks to Margaret, Kelly and David for making this happen.

Beautification Grant Awarded

27 May 95

BTNA has been awarded a $2,700 grant from San Jose Beautiful for the William Street Bridge Restoration Project. Proceeds will be used to install landscaping around this historic structure. Neighborhood landscape designer and artist, Cevan Forrist, will oversee this aspect of the beautification project. Cevan is best known for his works which include the atrium in San Jose City Hall.
